Our story began more than 50 years ago

How it all began

In 1953, George (Nick) Van Patten founded Nation-Wide Builders in Des Moines, Iowa. He hired Betty Anderson who later became his wife. Together, they built one of the largest retail operations in the country at that time. Its success and growth led to the start and incorporation of ADI in 1961. G.Nick’s interest in the building industry and sales developed during his college days at the University of Iowa where he pursued an engineering degree.

After starting his original operation on NE 14th Street in Des Moines, then moving to a larger facility at 1224 E. Diehl, he then entered into a business partnership with three other individuals. During this time, G.Nick’s incredible character and business acumen was clearly demonstrated by his fortitude in eventually buying out his partners when a tough financial time hit. Through their hard work and resiliency, they built a solid foundation for ADI for generations to come. G.Nick’s and Betty’s children and grandchildren remain an important part of this vital company and take great pride in carrying the legacy that was started in 1953.

Our facilities

The location at 706 East 2nd Street in Des Moines became ADI’s home in 1969. The facility was expanded in 1986 and again in 1996. The site contains more than 50,000 square feet of warehouse space. The location in Cedar Rapids was established in 2004, having started out of Alside’s window plant as a partnership with this quality manufacturer. In 2007, ADI outgrew the space and built a 13,000 square foot warehouse.

ADI in the community

The folks here at ADI believe in the value of supporting the community. Materials have been donated to Habitat for Humanity, local schools, and children’s organizations. ADI provides financial support to area high schools, especially to promote alcohol-free/drug-free events such as after-proms and sporting events. Nick Van Patten has also served on area boards of directors, including Variety Club of Iowa and Broadlawns Foundation.
